Jenny Lewis is really a sad showbizuppväxt to terapera – mom and dad had a Sonny and Cher-like show in Las Vegas, dad drew when she was three, my mother got caught up in heroin, Jenny made them as precocious barnstjärna in advertising and tv, the återsågs after twenty years when my mother lay dying of cancer.
to know this, for Lewis is so smart and cool that the emotions do not really come forward. Rather, it is a collection of remote orkesterpoplåtar with nice guests (Benmont Tench, Ringo Starr, Beck, Don Was and Jim Keltner) and a morally questionable producer (Ryan Adams). Lewis sings about the mother, childhood and sex with a wry smile and manages to always create a hard to define epic quality of their songs. It is a neat mourning she sings.
