The liberal presidential candidate Natasa Pirc Musar has become the first woman to win the presidency in Slovenia. After counting almost all the votes in the runoff on Sunday, the 54-year-old came to 54 percent. Centre-right candidate Anze Logar had 46 percent. “My first task will be to open a dialogue among all Slovenes,” said Pirc Musar.

Former Foreign Minister Logar admitted defeat. He expressed the hope that Pirc Musar would implement their election promises.

Pirc Musar will succeed President Borut Pahor. The Presidency of Slovenia is a largely ceremonial office. The head of state nominates candidates for the office of prime minister and the constitutional court, who are voted on by parliament.

Human rights activist and lawyer Pirc Musar once represented former US First Lady Melania Trump, who is from Slovenia. Among other things, it was about copyright.

The head of state is elected for five years and plays a more formal role. The outgoing head of state, Borut Pahor, was unable to stand as president after two terms. The former Yugoslav republic gained independence in 1991.
