“Two smugglers in Malaysia has been arrested with 3 300 endangered turtles. The arrest took place off the Malaysian coast by the coast guard. The turtles were of the nature nyaguineasköldpadda, which is endangered according to International union for conservation of nature (IUCN).”
“We hope that the investigation will give us a deeper understanding of how the smuggling takes place between Indonesia and its neighbouring countries,” says Elizabeth John, communications manager at the organisation Traffic, which maps the trade in endangered animals and plants.”
“the Turtles had an approximate value of the equivalent of 350 000 sek. They are sold primarily in China and Singapore as exotic pets, but are not rare within the food retailer. Malaysia has in recent times become a hub for djursmuggling.”
