STA. Did not finish. The initials, which no cyclist wants to see on his record. Locations with three digits is only marginally more tolerable.

Mads Würtz Schmidt has until now in this season we harvested more than enough of these agonizing remarks, as one by one in the general public has increased doubts about whether the 25-year-old rider can go the distance in the cut-throat game, as professional cycling is.

It can he. It is believe he, and his team, the Russian Katusha-crew, believe in him. His miserable spring and deep frustration can be traced back to december, when he was hit by a knee injury, as was his entire sæsonplanlægning to fall together.

– It has damn sure been hard. When I came to Tirreno-Adriatico (stage race in march, ed.), I was down in a black hole. I was tired of that there was something that worked, and that I was sick all the time, says Mads Würtz Schmidt.

There was nothing that went my way, and when I had to really start to build myself up again.

In december and January put the riders the foundation for the upcoming season, and it was crucial for the Würtz Schmidt, that he all in all has missed a month’s training in the period.

When he first in January was his knee injury quit and finally be able to train full force, he was after a few weeks hit by the flu, and got on antibiotics. Again, he came upstairs, so just again to be sick up to the premiere of klassikersæsonen.

– When we came to Belgium to run the classics, I was still in the building phase, as you are usually in over the winter, says Mads Würtz Schmidt.

– I had to give to put at the start in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, and then I was sick for ten days. When I won Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-Sanremo, it was without profit. I was just dragged around in manegen in the race.

I took the positive things with me from Harelbeke and Gent-Wevelgem (classics of World Tour-level, red.), but I have been missing, what to do in order to run with in the last half of the races.

His personal coach is Christa Skelde, who along with her husband, Michael, in his time was the driving force behind the Danish Cult-hold. Long conversations in recent months have indgydet Würtz Schmidt is a strong belief in the future and a deal of patience.

He sounds, however, not convincing, when he repeats the mantra that the season is long, and that the classics also run next year. He was itching to run the race in full force, and the Paris-Roubaix would be his proof that he has reached a turning point in the season.

– I told you even from to Flanders Around, I just knew that I had nothing to do in the race. Instead, I took a long hard træningsweekend to be ready for Roubaix, says Mads Würtz Schmidt, which trained 250 miles on Saturday and 240 kilometres on Sunday.

– I hope it gives the little kick needed to get upstairs. I have been missing the feel of the profits, but the I found at the weekend.

– What would like to happen Sunday in order for you to feel that you are back?

– I would like to complete the course, first and foremost. And I would like to run a race where I feel that I’m back on my level and not just sitting in the rear half and suffer, says Würtz Schmidt.

– My location is not so important. What is important is that I feel that I’m on the right track for the next race that awaits.

– Now, I just put the winter and this spring behind me, and then I start all over again. It has been a very frustrating period for me, and I sincerely hope that it is over now.

According to the plan Mads Würtz Schmidt run the Giro d’italia, which starts 11. may.
