In Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, two primary drives determine human behavior. The life instinct stands for the preservation and reproduction of the individual, the death instinct for the denial of life up to suicide. Freud’s thesis is open to interpretation and not undisputed. It would therefore be even more daring to apply the drives identified by Freud to developmental strands in human history. The Russian mathematician and (Soviet) dissident Igor Shafarevich did it. This is instructive.
