The social Security deficit is expected to reach a level of “history” of 52.2 billion euros in 2020, significantly more than the 41 billion euros announced at the end of April, said Tuesday the minister of the public Accounts Gérald Darmanin. The last record deficit was € 28 billion, in 2010, after the crisis of 2008.

“At the time when I speak to you, we are a degradation of 52.2 billion euros, that is to say that it was a degradation (…) of a little over 10 billion euros,” compared to the last forecast of the government, explained Gérald Darmanin during a hearing at the national Assembly. The health crisis, “plunges into the red the public accounts in general and in particular the social security accounts”, the minister underlined. “Obviously these are figures that are very worrying”, he added.
Despite this new revision, the minister of public Accounts has ruled out Tuesday to present a draft law on financing social security (PLFSS) corrigendum, the government forecasts are at this stage still very dependent on the evolution of the situation. “It is necessary that things are stabilizing, which will begin I believe with the déconfinement”, he explained, saying it wanted to wait to clarify the trajectory planned by the government for the social security accounts.
Interviewed by the chairman of the Finance commission Eric Woerth (RL), Mr. Darmanin, however, spoke of a possible return to the balance of social Security in the next four or five years. “One could imagine” returning to “the horizon of the year 2024-2025, but this is not a goal for now fully displayed, as we do not know exactly the basis from which we will depart this year,” he explained.
