The high number of vacant training places threatens to pose a threat to the German economy. “Despite the great efforts of the companies, the balance at the start of the training year is unsatisfactory,” said Rainer Dulger, President of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA), to WELT AM SONNTAG. “Without craftsmanship, we will not be able to get the digital and ecological transformation off the ground,” Dulger continues.

Around 182,000 apprenticeship positions are currently vacant. That is around 20 percent more than in the same month last year. “We now need a joint initiative by politics, business and society. Dual training is an anchor of prosperity in our country,” said the BDA President.

Daniel Schneider, General Manager of the Central Association of the German Bakery Trade, also draws a critical balance: “We expect the number of trainees to decrease and the number of vacancies to increase.”

The number of unfilled training positions in the bakery trade increased by 19.6 percent compared to the previous year. “This number is not only increasing dramatically in the bakery trade. Dual training is in crisis,” said Schneider WELT AM SONNTAG.

“The madness about graduating from high school and getting academization must be stopped and the equivalence of studies and training must be made clearer and communicated clearly to young people and parents,” demands Schneider.

“A rethinking must already take place in career orientation, in the role models in the media, in what parents advise their children”. The head of the association said that regional value creation and crafts had to be given greater social importance again.
