Hasselt Vandals last weekend, a true havoc wrought in the cemetery of Sint-Lambrechts-Herk in Hasselt. The perpetrators broke numerous tombs, threw figurines piece and kieperden hundreds of flower arrangements at the waste in the containers. The city would like to have the items that the vandalenstreek survived, as much as possible, back to the relatives to give.

Worried family members reason on Monday the whole day and in the Count of Brigodestraat in Sint Lambrechts-Herk, to the graves in the cemetery to inspect. The police came this weekend on the hallucinatory vandalenstreken to establish while stadsmedewerkers the debris came clean. The perpetrators are not yet apprehended. “There is effectively a lot of damage. A lot of figurines and vases were by vandals piece thrown,” says Laurence Libert (Open Vld), ships of historic preservation. “Hundreds of other decorative arts were in the containers. We had somewhere still lucky that there is a lot of green waste in those containers was, making the pieces of a ‘soft’ fell. A large part is therefore actually still undamaged. Our services have all of them one by one carefully from the containers removed. It is of course a terrible vandalenstreek. Moreover, we can now no longer figure out what is grave or decorative kitchenware belongs to. Therefore, we have everything neatly collected at the Central Workshops at the Hellebeemden. Anyone who is a victim, can go there for the grafstuk to pick up. So, we hope that all survivors can help.”

Even kindergrafjes

Jean-Marie Goethemd came Monday night special from his hometown Lummen to the grave of his younger brother drove. That died out in 1963, and the place was still a beautiful statue and an angel. “Just like the cross on his grave for is the breaking struck,” laments he. “That remains hard and incomprehensible for our family. What can there now on earth is the meaning of his?” Other family members were taken aback to look at the damage. The callous perpetrators have clear with brutal violence against some of the gravestones pounded. All the stones came loose and fell to even. “At this place hang, no cameras,” said Laurence Libert. “Maybe still testify to something heard or seen? The police are investigating that in any case. In the meantime, we understand not what to this foolish vandalenstreken has led.”

If the piece is still intact, it can again be picked up. Family members whose tomb has been damaged, can always report to the local police.
