The widow of the former Federal President Roman Herzog and longtime managing director of the Jagsthausen Castle Festival, Alexandra Freifrau von Berlichingen, is dead. As the festival announced on Thursday, she died on Wednesday at the age of 82. Baden-Württemberg’s Deputy Prime Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) praised her as a “strong and impressive personality”.

After the death of her first husband Götz Freiherr von Berlichingen in 1994, von Berlichingen succeeded him at the Burgfestspiele near Heilbronn. The festival explained that it led to “national awareness and a cultural highlight in the state of Baden-Württemberg”. Strobl formulated that she had shaped the festival “for decades with her dignity, elegance and grandeur”.

In 2001, she married her second wife, former Federal President Herzog, whose first wife had died a year earlier. Duke died in 2017.
