Christoph Daum suffers from cancer. The coach made this public on Instagram. The disease was diagnosed as part of “a routine examination”, wrote Daum. He did not give any further details.

According to Daum, he is being treated in Cologne. “I’m glad that it works very well for me,” wrote the 68-year-old. He wants to remain optimistic and get well again as soon as possible. “You know me: I’m a fighter,” wrote Daum. He sent an urgent note to his followers: “I can only advise you all: Go to cancer screening in good time!”

Daum coached Bayer Leverkusen, 1. FC Köln, Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, which he led to the German championship in 1992. Daum also became known for the cocaine affair in 2000, which cost him his permanent job as national coach.

It has been five years since his last engagement. In 2017 his time as national coach of Romania ended after missing the World Cup qualification. He is a volunteer trainer for FC Diabetologie, a team of doctors, scientists, diabetes consultants and people with diabetes. Daum had recently largely withdrawn from the public.
