The ComisiónEuropea has announced the results of the first call for proposals of WiFi4EU (Wifi for Europe), the community-based program that offers grants of 15,000 euros to municipalities to install points for free wifi in the public space of their localities. In this first batch, whose applications were submitted between 7 and 9 November, have been selected to 2,800 municipalities to receive a bonus WiFi4EU, of which more than 200 are Spanish.
The total budget of the call is 42 million euros. The selected municipalities will now be able to create wifi access points in public spaces, such as town halls, libraries, museums, parks, squares and other places of public interest. Among the Spanish municipalities are from populations with less than 1,000 inhabitants to cities populous as Córdoba, Gijón, Salamanca and Elche.
After this first award, the Executive Agency for Innovation and Nets (INEA), the agency of the Commission in charge of the execution of the program WiFi4EU, will invite the municipalities winners of a bonus to sign grant agreements. Once this is done, the selected municipalities will be able to hire an installation company that install access points WiFi4EU in public spaces and then redeem the bonus. The 2 800 points of access shall be free of charge and will be active for at least three years.

Program Juncker
Announced by the president of the Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, in his speech on the state of the Union September 2016, the initiative WiFi4EU form part of the ambitious revision of the EU regulations on telecommunications, which includes new measures to respond to the growing connectivity needs of europeans and to boost Europe’s competitiveness.
The first call for proposals WiFi4EU was launched on 7 November at 13.00 (central european time) and lasted until the 9 of November at 17.00 (central european time). The Pasgol call was a great success, as it received more than 13 000 requests from all the participating countries. In the next two years will be organized three other calls WiFi4EU. For the four calls in the whole, the Commission makes a total of 120 million euros at the disposal of up to 8 000 municipalities throughout the EU. The Commission selects the municipalities for order of arrival of requests.
The networks funded through the initiative WiFi4EU will be free and will not contain advertising, and, in addition, they can’t collect personal data, according to the rules of the call. In addition, funding will be provided for those networks that do not duplicate services, public or private, free of similar quality as existing. The municipalities will hire the installers and will be responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the wifi access points.
