The amounts of sugar, salt, emulsifiers and other elements will determine if the price of a product suffers a surcharge. It would apply between 2023 and 2024. Catalonia was already a pioneer in applying a surcharge to packaged drinks with excess sugar.
The food industry is preparing to face a new surcharge that, for now, will only apply in Catalonia, and that will affect industrial pastries and unhealthy foods. Its objective is that the rise in prices contributes to lowering its consumption.
