Unemployment rose by 60,800 people between July and September, which is almost 2.1% more than in the previous quarter, while employment increased by 77,700 jobs (0.4%), placing the total number of employed over 20.5 million people, according to data from the Active Population Survey (EPA) for the third quarter of the year published today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The unemployment rate thus stood at 12.67%, 18 hundredths more than in the previous quarter.

Regarding employment, it increased in the quarter in services, 114,300 more people, and in industry, with 33,100 more; while it fell in agriculture, with 60,300 less; and in construction, with 9,400 less, affected by the heat wave.

At the end of September, the total number of unemployed stood at 2,980,200 people and that of employed people, at 20,545,700 people, its highest figure since the third quarter of 2008, when it exceeded 20.55 million workers.

Except for the third quarter of 2020, when unemployment skyrocketed to 355,000 people due to the pandemic, the rise in registered unemployment this summer is the worst data in a third quarter since 2012, when it grew by 93,200 people. In the summer of 2021 there was a decrease in unemployment of 127,100 people.

The unemployment rate rose almost two tenths in the third quarter of this year, to 12.67%, while the activity rate rose by just over one tenth, to 58.86%, after increasing the number of active 138,500 people between July and September (0.6%).

With regard to job creation, the 77,700 jobs generated in the third quarter contrast with the strong upturns that were registered in the same period of 2020 (569,600 jobs) and 2021 (359,300), in which the end of the restrictions boosted job creation. Compared to the third quarter of 2019, before the pandemic, the number of newly employed registered this year is somewhat higher.

Households with all their members unemployed fell by 12,900 in the third quarter of the year, 1.3% compared to the previous quarter, to stand at 977,400, the lowest since the end of 2008. In the last year, households with all their members unemployed have been reduced by 144,700, which represents a decrease of 12.9% in relative values.

With regard to households with all their members employed, between July and September they rose by 47,100 (0.4%), to a total of 11,294,200 households, a new all-time high. In the last year, families with all their members employed have increased by 495,300 (4.6%).

Households with at least one asset rose by 63,100 in the third quarter (0.4%), to 13.82 million, while in the last year they increased by 158,200 (1.1%). Lastly, households in which there are no assets fell by 13,000 between July and September (-0.2%), to 5.3 million. However, in the last year, these households have increased by 48,700 (0.9%).
