Not a single University in Germany, and is headed by a Person born in the East. This is the result of an analysis by the centre for higher education development (CHE). Typically, the management of a University, therefore, is a man, born in the West, with an average of 59 years old, – stated in the analysis, for the biographies of 81 presidents and presidents or rectors of public universities have been evaluated.
All are born in the West: “Thirty years after the reunification, a University landscape without Top executives with East German roots is quite remarkable”, says CHE managing Director Frank Ziegele. Four lines have a place of birth abroad, including Christian Thomsen, President TU Berlin, was born in Bern, Switzerland. The low number of executives from East Germany, also in other industries, obviously.
77 percent of the Unileitungen are male
In the Uni-line offices to be dominated by men. Their share is 77 per cent – and, until Recently, the rate was even higher, because every fourth President or rector is first-come 2018 into the office. The women are on average slightly younger (of 57.8 years) than men (59.4 years). Only five are under 50 years, the current youngest is with 43 years of Gerd Strohmeier of the TU Chemnitz. Overall, Ziegele wishes to the Leadership, a greater heterogeneity at all levels: “In the student’s educational biographies, the variety arrived on the Campus, why not more diversity in the leadership positions?”

is striking: As the External, only 29 occupations, 36 per cent were. All the others were already at their Uni. 43 percent also Vice-presidential. On average, the Unileitungen have been in office since 2012. The oldest – Wolfgang Herrmann from the technical University of Munich – will leave office after 24 years at the end of September. His successor, Thomas Hofmann, also a man from the West.
