The Department of rhetoric at the University of Tübingen has been awarded the members of Parliament Cem Özdemir (Green) for the “speech of the year 2018”. The politicians receive the award for a Bundestag speech of 22. February, in which he had defended the freedom of the press, said the University of Tübingen on Thursday. His speech was a powerful plea for an open society, against exclusion and division, – stated in the explanatory statement.

Özdemir had used with his speech against a disapproval of the texts of the journalist Deniz Yücel, which had been requested by the AfD. With his contribution to the debate, he had shown how effective and powerful in a Parliament speech of a speaker with Conviction and passion to the departure. The speech was an “outstanding example of how you can offer the populists in the Parliament, the end”.

The University recognizes annually since 1998 in a speech that has influenced the political or cultural discussion. Criteria include Impact, reasoning, or stylistic quality. Previous winners are Margot Käßmann, Marcel Reich-Ranicki, Joschka Fischer and Pope Benedict XVI
