BLUES/SOUL the Sixth album in four years. It is now 50 years and one week ago, Van Morrison released his debut album ”Astral weeks” but he has never held an equally high publishing rate as now.
Possibly it has something to do with his high-profile divorce earlier this year. Maybe the tempo is simply a way for the 73-year-old to take the battle against the aging process.
The latest discs has been an uneven mix of more or less perfunctory interpretations of old jazz, blues and r’n’b favourites, and the small splash of the unexpected inspired the new material.
Album number 40 belongs to the later years to exhaust anyone. Just as in ”Your’re driving me crazy” in the spring work Morrison with multi-instrumentalist Joey DeFrancesco and his band, who see to it that it turns organic about the old shots of vodka, John Lee Hooker and Sam Cooke .
But the big benefits are the six new songs. Not least, the long bluesballaden ”Ain’t gonna moan no more” and the gorgeous, jazzy title song delivers just the soulkänsliga narrative that no one master better than Morrison.
Plus also for the gentle bahis siteleri humor that rock back buttergubbe shows with the cover. And when he bräker as a sheep in ”Rollin’ and tumblin’’”.
