Tennis is A great performance. Elise Mertens qualified today for the finals of the WTA tournament in Doha. In the semi-final battle counted them off with Angelique Kerber (WTA 6): 6-4, 2-6 and 6-1. For the last hurdle awaits Simona Halep (WTA 3).
Yesterday knocked it with Kiki Bertens in her first top-ten player of the year, today with Angelique Kerber, a triple grandslamwinnares and former number one in the world. And or Elise Mertens (23) in bloedvorm condition. Like a whirlwind she went, especially in set one and three of the worst. Another story in set two. Kerber krikte her level, and illustrated why she is a former number one in the world. In no time, hanging the signs again in balance: 6-2. Those who thought that Kerber is also in the set of three just for a moment about our fellow could go rolling, was cheated out of. In the final battle is Mertens across a new klepper: the Romanian Simona Halep. The topreekshoofd kegelde fourth seed Svitolina in three sets out of the tournament after a 2 hour and 9 minute fight: 6-3, 3-6 and 6-4. Halep, that in 2014 the tournament in Doha and won, recently coached by Thierry Van Cleemput, the ex-coach of David Goffin. The 27-year-old Halep, former number one in the world, stands for the 34th time in the final of a WTA tournament. She has 18 WTA titles to her name.
Mertens is in her sixth WTA final, seeking a fifth WTA title. The ladies took the two times earlier against each other. Last year was Halep, both at Roland Garros (6-2, 6-1) as well as in Madrid (6-0, 6-3) are clearly too strong in two sets.
