The European Competition Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, has opened the door for digital giants such as Google, Meta or Netflix to co-finance the networks of telecommunications operators, thus assuming the argument of the telcos, who point out that these groups are responsible for the immense most of the traffic that is generated in the networks. The telecoms explain that this exponential increase in use is forcing the operators to increase their investments to meet the demand, without achieving any compensation. Vestager, however, cooled the hopes of the telecoms that Brussels will relax its rules in order to allow more concentration between operators from the same country, pointing out that his arguments “are not new”.
Margrethe Vestager, the European commissioner responsible for competition and the digital area, has indicated that Europe could consider forcing the large digital groups such as Google, Meta (Facebook) or Netflix to assume part of the costs of the networks.
