The Château de Cussigny, classified as a Historic Monument since 1960, was destroyed by fire on July 30. The building dating mainly from the 18th century is located in Corgoloin, a small town between Beaune and Nuits-Saint-Georges (Côte d’Or). Around 5:30 a.m., the Beaune gendarmes reported to the emergency services that thick smoke was coming from the castle. In the process, nearly 40 firefighters from Nuits-Saint-Georges, Dijon and Brazey-en-Plaine mobilized to control the flames, as reported by Le Bien public. No injuries are to be deplored, the building of approximately 200 m2 being disused and inaccessible to the public. The cause of the fire remains undetermined. An investigation is opened with the gendarmerie to determine the cause of the accident.

The main focus of the fire was extinguished at 10 a.m. Firefighters later completed extinguishing the fire in the rest of the building. In the castle, significant damage was noted. Part of the building has collapsed, while another threatens to fall. The framework and the (wooden) floors were totally destroyed. Only the old stone walls and a few beams resisted the flames. Residents of Corgoloin shared their emotion at the destruction of the historic site. “It’s sad, it was a bit the soul of the neighborhood, reports a resident to Franceinfo. I was born on the farm next door, I’ve known this castle for 65 years! It was Cussigny’s story, we grew up with it.”

In June 2022, a prefectural decree set up a temporary perimeter for a deferred development zone (ZAD) in Corgoloin. This provided for a right of pre-emption to the community of communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges in the event of the sale of the château. According to Bien public, the community planned to create a “family holiday village” on the perimeter of 7 hectares which includes the park and the castle of Cussigny.
