The 51st International Comics Festival (FIBD), which will be held in Angoulême from January 25 to 28, will be part of the programming of the “Cultural Olympiad” label, mixing art and sport, linked to the organization of the Olympic Games of Paris 2024.
Four other major festivals, the Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25), the Avignon Festival (June 29-July 21), Rock en Seine (August 21-25) and the Arles Photographic Meetings (July 1-22). She underlined the “links that are forged between art and sport, art and Olympic values” through this set of cultural projects undertaken from 2022, until the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2024. On this occasion, the event participated in the organization of the exhibition L’Art de cours, at the Château de Malbrouck (Moselle) from October 13 to December 3 then from January 16 to October 3, 2024. Unpublished works by the designer and Italian illustrator Lorenzo Mattotti are included.
After a year 2023 which allowed it to reconnect with its audience, declining in 2022 and absent due to cancellation in 2021, the FIBD is once again banking on the world of manga and renewing the installation of Manga city, a space dedicated to Japanese art, in the heart of the city. Four exhibitions will be devoted to Japanese artists, including Moto Hagio, more than 150 works of which will be presented at the Angoulême museum, Hiroaki Samura and Shin’ichi Sakamoto, as well as the animated film director Rintarô. Mangakas Moto Hagio and Hiroaki Samura will be present.
Riad Sattouf, winner of the Festival Grand Prix in 2023, will be dedicated to the exhibition, The Arab of the Future, World Work. It “brings to life the characters, the places (mainly Brittany and Syria), the customs, the eras and the cultural differences between the West and the Mediterranean East which run through the six volumes of the series” specifies the press release. of the demonstration. A collective exhibition, a nod to the organization of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, will be held in the “New Creation” space, which replaces the “Young Talents” pavilion. Entitled “Starting line(s), There is no point in running?”, it will bring together artists around the question of starting lines and athletic running. The designer Nine Antico will be in the spotlight with the exhibition Chambre avec vue, in which 200 pieces (notebooks, fanzines, personal archives, storyboards, etc.), including around a hundred originals will highlight the full extent of her talent. Screenwriter Thierry Smolderen, 2022 winner of the prestigious Goscinny Prize, will reveal his creative process in The scenario is a DIY.
The festival also revealed the 45 titles in the official selection, which once again gives pride of place to independent houses and Japanese comics. Among the titles chosen, the fourth volume of the dark and fascinating thriller Saint-Elme, signed by the talented Serge Lehman and Frederik Peeters or the second episode of the tragicomic stroll in the abandoned territories of the former USSR in the mid-1990s 1990 designed by Pierre-Henry Gomont, Slava.

Without forgetting the subtle parody of the documentary comic Digging Voguer where Delphine Panique evokes the very real suffering of precarious workers of our time. Among other revelations, the festival unveiled the three posters signed Riad Sattouf, Nine Antico and Hiroaki Samura as well as the René Goscinny Prize, recognizing an emerging talent and an established screenwriter. This year, he singled out the seasoned Julie Birmant for Dali avant Gala and the young Simon Boileau for La Ride. Both awards will be presented during the festival.
