The “Ethnology Will Surprise You! » returns for its sixth edition on March 2 and 3 and addresses the theme of the body and its transcendence. Organized by the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, this biennial event celebrates young ethnologists, artists and researchers. Ethnology, a science in constant evolution, offers an in-depth understanding of societies and cultures thanks to field surveys and archives that the museum highlights.

The programming for this edition will explore the body through different perspectives. Activities will include four major conferences around the reading of rituals involving the body, its modifications and its physiological limits, as well as interactive and visual mini-conferences called Searching Heads, addressing subjects such as the power of the body in dance Balinese and psychedelic pilgrimages in the Peruvian Amazon. Commentaries on works and flash tours of the collections will be offered throughout the weekend for all audiences.

For movie buffs, three films will be screened: Dancing Hope , a portrait of Germaine Acogny; The Battle of Passinho, about the dance originating from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro; and De Humani Corporis Fabrica, a cinematic exploration of the human body. Comic book lovers will also find what they are looking for: the Jacques Kerchache reading room will offer an original selection of comics related to the body during the weekend.

Saturday evening will offer unique visits to the museum, artistic performances in collaboration with the National Dance Center, but also a Drag King cabaret, a solo by Brazilian choreographer Volmir Cordeiro and an educational show on krump. The night will end on a dancefloor with a DJ set, offering participants a unique musical experience and another way to experience body movement.
