While the Barbenheimer duel of the summer leans heavily in favor of the Mattel doll, its director Greta Gerwig continues to burst the screen. Indeed, despite its deprogramming in different countries around the world, Barbie continues to break all records. Grossing $1.2 billion worldwide, it became the highest-grossing film directed by a woman, surpassing Anna Boden’s Captain Marvel ($1.1 billion).
The latest success of the feature film is happening within the house of Warner Bros. In the United States, Barbie generated $537.5 million. Enough to elevate it to the production company’s highest-grossing film on the national stage. Height of history, he thus dethroned The Dark Knight (535 million dollars) directed by… Christopher Nolan!
The British filmmaker, a major figure at Warner Bros for many years, had decided to leave the century-old studio after his previous feature film Tenet. For Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan had joined Universal, a competing company that offered him a real golden bridge. The company behind Super Mario Bros. the film offered him a budget of 100 million dollars to build his film and an equivalent sum to promote it. On top of that, the director had “full control” over his oeuvre according to The Hollywood Reporter. The icing on the cake, the father of Inception and Interstellar also obtained the assurance of receiving 20% of the film’s receipts.
Despite this change of house, there is no resentment. During an interview with Variety, Michael De Luca, producer at the head of Warner, said he wanted to reconnect with C. Nolan: “We hope he comes back”.
