The Barbie film directed by Greta Gerwig has passed the billion dollar mark in box office revenue worldwide, a first for a solo director, according to estimates on Sunday August 6 from the specialized firm Exhibitor Relations. With the duo Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, already iconic as Barbie and Ken, the comedy which features the doll venturing into the real world totals more than 1.03 billion dollars worldwide, including 459 million dollars in North America.

The Barbie pink wave continues to sweep through cinemas, three weekends after its long-awaited release. The film, which was the subject of an intense marketing campaign, quickly established itself as a huge commercial success. With an additional $ 53 million earned over the weekend in North America, it offers a breath of fresh air to cinemas, hard hit by the Covid-19 and the switch of the public to streaming services.

“The film has captured the imagination of moviegoers around the world and these results are incredibly impressive, with a global total that exceeded one billion dollars this weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, media analyst at the specialized company Comscore.
