Mortelle Adèle is a little red-haired girl with a strong character and very direct language who was created by Antoine Dole in 2012. Mr Tan (Antoine Dole) and Diane Le Feyer decided in June 2022 to leave their publisher, Bayard Jeunesse, for better control the process from start to finish. At the time, Mortelle Adèle had, according to its authors, a total of 11 million copies. The figure has risen to 15 million today. Another volume, “The fourth great adventure of Mortelle Adèle, with 128 pages of enigmas and adventures”, is expected in bookstores on November 2. A bimonthly, Mortelle Adèle Le Mag’ has been published since the end of June by Prisma, a competitor of Bayard Presse.
Other comic book authors have become publishers, in a sector where authors often complain of their low remuneration. The Franco-Syrian Riad Sattouf, author of L’Arabe du futur, left Allary editions to edit Les Livres du futur in 2021. One of the big hits of recent years, My name is Kylian (2021) by Kylian Mbappé and cartoonist Faro, was published by a house created for the occasion, KM Éditions.
