Anatomy of a fall shatters the “Barbenheimer” couple: if Barbie still dominates the French box office, Oppenheimer gives up its second place in the face of the spectacular success of the French drama by Justine Triet, the best start for a Palme d’Or for 15 years, according to CBO Box Office figures Wednesday.
A planetary phenomenon carried by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Barbie has reached 5.3 million cumulative admissions since its release in French cinemas on July 19. For its sixth week of operation, the film dedicated to the most famous of dolls is still collecting 397,083 admissions.
The only novelty to enter the top 3, Anatomy of a Fall attracted 346,499 spectators for its first week, three months after winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Drawing inspiration from news items, director Justine Triet retraces the trial of a German author (actress Sandra Hüller) accused at the assizes of the murder of her husband, in their chalet in the French Alps.
Carried by the prestige of Cannes and a good word-of-mouth, the film signs the best start for a Palme d’Or since Between the walls of Laurent Cantet, which had attracted nearly 450,000 spectators the week of its release in France in 2008 .
Oppenheimer drops to third after holding second place on the podium for five weeks. This tortuous portrait of the designer of the atomic bomb, signed Christopher Nolan, still attracted 309,685 additional spectators, exceeding 4 million cumulative entries in six weeks.
