We can no longer stop progress. On December 25, the most-watched program on Netflix was… A Fireplace. On the screen, logs glow red, flames swirl: it’s the magic of Christmas. Enough to stay glued to your TV for a whole day thinking about the beauty of the world.

There was, however, something else to watch on Netflix, but it’s a little more corrosive: Armageddon, the new show by Ricky Gervais. The title is scary, but the content is hilarious. From the outset, Gervais explains that he decided to become woke. And anti-fascist. That way, journalists will no longer ask him if he gassed Jews. Becoming woke is, he says, a bit like going to a school and no longer having to prove that you are not a pedophile.

Gervais is jubilant, has a great time, explains that he has 40 radiators and 20 air conditioning units at home, that he turns everything on full blast to reach an ambient temperature of 19°, the one his cat prefers. Then he reminds us that, it is well known, all white people are racist. He suggests that there are only two sexes and that women do not have penises: if they do, they can therefore use men’s toilets in public places.

There is a passage to cry on a website specializing in the mistreatment of dogs in the cinema. Some Internet users ask if, by chance, these beasts would be brutalized in Schindler’s List. Elon Musk takes it for his rank, Greta Thunberg too. At the end, Gervais reminds us that we must “laugh at evil to overcome it”. Next door, Gaspard Proust is Fernand Raynaud.
