Ever since Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released fifteen years ago, fans have been waiting for the return of Indiana Jones, history’s most fearless professor archeologist. After a first weekend of exploitation of the fifth part of its new adventures now directed by James Mangold, the box office of the United States and Canada has delivered its first verdict: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is placed in head with a total of some $130 million in revenue. The start doesn’t look like a miracle, but puts this film at the top of the North American box office, according to preliminary estimates on Sunday. Harrison Ford, 80, once again plays the famous archaeologist in one of the most anticipated family blockbusters of the year. James Mangold took over as director from Steven Spielberg, who had so far directed all the components since 1981. Disney, which got its hands on the saga at the same time as Star Wars by buying Lucasfilm in 2012, has already warned that it would be Harrison Ford’s last appearance in one of the most defining roles of his long career. In this new opus, actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge (from the Fleabag series) plays the goddaughter of Indiana Jones and does not hesitate to shake up the archaeologist, who has established himself as an emblematic character in popular culture.
On the second step of the podium, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hangs on for its fifth week of operation, with 11.5 million dollars in revenue. The film propels its hero, Miles Morales, the new face of Spider-Man, into a world made up of parallel dimensions (multiverse). In third place, just behind, the animated film Elementary garners 11.3 million dollars. This fantastic tale from the Pixar studio (Disney) places immigration in the background. The Challenge, Sony’s comedy with actress Jennifer Lawrence, remains in fourth place, with 7.5 million. Finally, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, from Paramount, brings in $7 million. The 6 other films in the top 10 of the North American box office6 – Ruby, the teenage Kraken (5.2 million dollars) 7 – The Little Mermaid (5.2 million) 8 – The Flash (5 million) 9 – Asteroid City (3.8 million) 10 – Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (1.8 million)
