Irish Grinstead, member of the American girl group 702, known for hit songs such as Where My Girls At or Steelo, has died, her sister announced on Saturday, September 16, on Instagram. She was 43 years old.
“It is with great sadness that I must announce that my beautiful sister and friend passed away this evening. She fought a long battle and is finally at peace. This girl was as bright as the stars! She was not only beautiful on the outside, but also on the inside,” wrote Lemisha Grinstead, also part of the musical group.
The cause of death has not been revealed. But The Hollywood Reporter recalls that the group announced last December that Irish Grinstead was withdrawing from the stage due to “serious medical problems.”
The group 702, which included Kameelah Williams and sisters Irish and LeMisha Grinstead in its best-known lineup, took its name from the area code of their hometown, Las Vegas. The girls band achieved its first success in 1996 with the album, No Doubt, which sold 500,000 copies. One title stands out, Steelo, which will be used in the soundtrack of the Cousin Skeeter series.
Three years later, their second album, titled 702, included their most famous song, Where My Girls At. During their career, the group was selected for the American Music Award as well as the BET Award, rewarding African artists -Americans.
In 2006, the group broke up for an 11-year hiatus before appearing, in 2021, in the Bet Presents reality series The Encore: The Last Chance Group in which former “girl band” celebrities of the years 2000 aim to rebuild their musical training and experience success again, in 30 days.
