The facade of the Palais Garnier in Paris, under scaffolding for work for several months, was once again covered on Tuesday, signed by the artist JR and depicting a cave, in front of which a performance by 150 dancers will take place on Sunday, announced the ‘institution.
A first installation by the artist in September and October showed an immense cavern. It is now a cave whose walls are studded with human footprints. This “will reveal its secrets” on Sunday, the Paris Opera said in a press release.
At 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., on the Place de l’Opéra, closed to traffic, “at the invitation of JR, the choreographer Damien Jalet offers Chiroptera, a performance for 153 dancers from all over Europe, with the exceptional participation of Amandine Albisson, star dancer of the Paris National Opera,” he said.
The sound creation will be by Thomas Bangalter, formerly of the electro duo Daft Punk, according to the Opera. Restoration work on the facade of this historic monument, which is also one of the two stages of the Paris Opera with the Opéra Bastille, is planned until the end of 2024.
