The digital universe is reinforced as a new business opportunity for the sports industry, which seeks to combine the best of the physical and virtual worlds to attract the younger population and monetize fans.
The digital world has opened up a new universe of possibilities for sport. Through Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Blockchain technologies for NFTs (non-fungible tokens), the metaverse has opened a new business path for the sports industry, which has been launched into video games, leagues online, digital collections, virtual stores, fan gatherings in the virtual world… Everything is open in this line of income that brings sport closer to new generations and promotes monetization in difficult times after the impact of Covid.
LaLiga has been the last to fully join this trend. Through an alliance with TVM, the Spanish football manager -which already had agreements in the NFT world- has just created its own virtual world, just days after the Association of Basketball Clubs (ACB) did it through an application that combines the digital experience with interactions in the real world.
