Manet-Degas, the flagship exhibition of the season at the Musée d’Orsay, is one of the greatest successes of the Parisian museum. Launched on March 28, it ended on July 23, 2023 and welcomed 669,160 visitors. That is 6,509 visitors on average per day, over 102 days of opening. It ranks third among the museum’s most popular exhibitions, after the one on Munch last year and the one dedicated to Picasso in 2018.
Manet-Degas aimed to “bring together for the first time two central figures in the history of art through a direct and brilliant confrontation”, details the institution in a press release. Nearly 200 works were presented, many of which were lent by American and European museums, allowing visitors to discover masterpieces by the two painters. Conceived in partnership with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the exhibition will continue in New York from the fall of 2023.
The Musée d’Orsay has also just closed another exhibition, Pastels du Musée d’Orsay. From Millet to Redon, which has attracted 440,080 since March 14, a record figure for temporary exhibition spaces in the Amont pavilion.
