“It’s really crazy.” Marie-Ange Luciani and David Thion, the producers of Anatomy of a Fall, shared their joy on BFMTV, a few moments after the feature film won two Golden Globes on the night of January 7 to 8, for the best foreign film and for best screenplay. Justine Triet’s production had already won the 2023 Palme d’Or at Cannes.
“We are on cloud nine, it was really crazy. When we went into the ceremony we said to ourselves: “Can we win?” And when Justine Triet’s name is pronounced twice, it’s really a crazy emotion,” Marie-Ange Luciani reported to BFMTV. His partner David Thion has difficulty achieving the feat. “We can say that we were outsiders, because we were still surrounded by big names and films that did extremely well,” he told France Info.
Anatomy of a Fall recounts the trial of a writer accused of the murder of her husband. Throughout the film, the audience witnesses the couple’s fall from grace. And for the producer, if the feature film appealed, it is perhaps because “the question of the couple is universal” and that it “affects everyone”. “The question of the couple is undoubtedly central, in a legal context, that explains why the film is very gripping and reaches a fairly wide audience,” the second producer also told BFMTV.
After receiving her first trophy and a few minutes before receiving a second, director Justine Triet delivered an acceptance speech on the Golden Globes stage. “When we started writing this project with my life and work partner Arthur Harari, we were in the middle of a pandemic, stuck in our apartment, and strangely, no one died,” she joked.
“I remember we were like, ‘Okay, we’re having a lot of fun, but this is way too radical and dark. No one is going to see this movie. It’s too long, they talk all the time, there’s not enough music, a couple fighting, a suicide, a dog vomiting.” But I wanted to make this film, she continued. I don’t know exactly how things worked out but I’m so happy. I was able to do exactly what I love.”
After the coronation of Anatomy of a Fall at the Golden Globes, the producers of the film are not closing the door to a statuette at the Oscars. “Tonight, we are like movie-loving children, there were many actors and actresses that we admire, including Meryl Streep, who said incredible things. When we see that, we say to ourselves that yes, it’s possible, why not,” Marie-Ange Luciani told BFMTV.
