In October 2023, Whoopi Goldberg met with Pope Francis. A memorable moment for the American actress and presenter who had been hoping for this honor for a long time, eleven years according to her own words. The one who experienced international recognition thanks to her incarnation of the charismatic Sister Marie-Clarence in Sister Act was strongly impressed by the personality of the sovereign pontiff. “He is exactly what I hoped for, a pope for everyone. For all religions and that’s what I liked. I wanted to thank him for my gay and divorced friends, because he told me, ‘Listen, God loves you no matter what you’ve done, come back to the Church,'” she said on social media.
Whoopi Goldberg, whose audacity we know, took advantage of her meeting to promote Sister Act 3, a remake or a sequel to the cult 1992 film, by proposing to the Pope to participate in this comedy which should be released on the screens in 2025. According to her, François would be an unconditional “fan” of the destiny of the cabaret singer Dolorès Van Cartier who, touched by grace, would become Sister-Marie Clarence, the soul of the choir of the convent of San Francisco.
Not without humor, the Pope would have responded to this cheeky proposal from Whoopi Goldberg. The latter, sparing suspense, did not reveal the content of her response. François as an exceptional guest star in Sister Act 3 would give a unique anointing to a film in which we are promised that, this time, Whoopi Goldberg should fight the harmful influence of the mafia.
It seems unlikely that the Pope would agree to act in a comedy, even in his own role. In the meantime, Whoopi Goldberg has promised that her companions from the original 1992 film will return to service. Thirty years will have passed but Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena should be there, to pay, of course, a beautiful tribute to François.
