Music Last week to enter a boat with 3,000 metalheads and 60 bands from Florida to Haiti during the 70000 Tons of Metal-cruise. The only Belgian delegation was Carnation, a death metal band with members from Aarschot and Heist-op-den-Berg. Our reporter saw the young band made an impression on the international audience.

Carnation literally has its own face, because frontman Simon Duson invariably occurs with a roodgeverfd face and a black bikerjas. Musically distinguish the young men with catchy nostalgic nods to death metal from the late 80’s and early 90’s, which, moreover, remarkably tight is played.

The band released after the ep Cemetery of the Insane last summer, the first full cd Chapel of Abhorrence . Carnation is still six years, but has a clear goal: life of the music, which is not exactly mainstream. The musicians weren’t when she was less than a week before the departure we were asked to perform – even though they had permanent bassist Yarne Heylen therefor that made them to be replaced by Niels Beirinckx.

“It really is a fantastic experience,” says Simon on the boat. “We hoped for a while something like this can do. When we request binnenkregen, literally five days before the cruise, we just drop everything as soon as possible to come here. This you should just do when you get the chance.” It were busy days: “Flights were not booked, so that was all put in order”, Simon continued. “Actually I have three days of lots of work, even with the Esta applications for all members and the flights and so on. But we are still touched, and everything is really very good.”
