The number of business creations fell by 1% in 2023 in France, INSEE announced on Friday, due to a drop in the creation of traditional businesses and companies and despite an increase in the creation of micro-enterprises. In total, 1.051 million businesses were created – around 10,000 fewer than during the record year 2022 – including 667,000 by micro-entrepreneurs, according to a press release.

“With more than a million businesses created in 2023, the level of business creation nevertheless remains high,” notes the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies. The decline comes from a decline in company creations (-7.9% to 270,000) and traditional individual businesses (-6.2% to 114,000), while micro-enterprise foundations increased by 3.1%. In 2023, these represented more than 63% of business creations.

In December, the indicator fell back into the red, business creations falling by 1.6% over one month, due to a clear drop in traditional business creations while micro-enterprise registrations were stable. . Business creations increased by 0.6% in November, better than initially announced.

In detail, in 2023, the number of business creations in the construction and manufacturing industry sector declined, as did the real estate activities sector. On the other hand, the number is increasing in the categories “transport and warehousing” as well as “accommodation and catering”, as well as in the field of information and communication.

Like every month of 2023, INSEE warns that “the developments in business creations recorded since the start of 2023 must be interpreted with great caution”, due to the implementation of the electronic window, “a significant change” which “temporarily weakens the monthly monitoring of business creations”. “However, the effect of this change on the measurement of the annual volume of business creations is generally limited,” indicates the institute.
