EVERY year, in Italy, there are over 30 thousand accidents on the slopes , and of these 1700 are forcing you to stay in hospital. However, a good athletic preparation, caution and common sense can help you avoid the worst for those planning a holiday skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating, tobogganing and snowshoeing. According to the National Surveillance System on Accidents in the Mountains, coordinated by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, accidents on the snow involving more men (55%) than women (45%) and in 50% of cases occur within 30 years of age.

33% of the cases the rescue operation on the slopes is done following distortion. Follow contusions (26%), fractures (14%), wounds (9%) and dislocations (8%). “These traumas may also require a surgical intervention. If skiing urges, in particular joints, and, among these, especially those of the lower limbs – emphasises Francesco Falez, president of the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and traumatology (Siot) – snowboarding, exposes you to greater risk for the upper limbs, especially the shoulder, hand and wrist”. 65% of the accidents takes place in conditions of good visibility, therefore, is not due to bad weather, but are caused by loss of control.

On the occasion of the start of the ski season, this is the handbook to protect themselves from the risks:

1. Good physical preparation: a few months before the holidays in the mountains is a good rule to devote to training.
2. Never underestimate the pain and discomfort: are alarm bells that may alter the control of the movement.
3. Heating: keep in mind that stretching exercises for the joints the first of the descents.
4. Caution: understand your limits, never overdo it, stopping if necessary.
5. Weather: carefully consider weather conditions, visibility and characteristics of the snow.
6. Speed: must be appropriate to the preparation technique and physical conditions of the time and of the slopes.

8. Meals: not being weighed down to lunch and never skip breakfast.

10. A helmet is effective in reducing the risk of head trauma, should be used by adults and children.
