The writer “hopes” that Emmanuel Macron will inaugurate the new Wall in “October,” he wrote, noting that “the work in the Field of mars, tagged calls racist and anti-semitic, vandalized, slandered by some, was defended by the Mayor of Paris and a large number of distinguished intellectuals.”

The Wall for Peace, a pretext for a political fight ?

The monument, designed by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, was inaugurated in march 2000 by Jacques Chirac, in the framework of the celebrations of the year 2000.

The Mayor of Paris is back on the genesis and spirit of this work: “The Wall for Peace had been installed in place Joffre in the Seventh arrondissement in order to embody peace in the world. The word peace is written in 49 languages on its large glass panels.” Before adding: “The place Joffre must accommodate the Large Palace of the Ephemeral, which will open its doors at the beginning of 2021, with a range of cultural, sport and the olympic games.”

The Wall for Peace was installed, originally, for four months, but was finally kept. Associations for the protection of heritage had been removing their horse of battle. The work has been at the centre of a court battle with the mayor of the Seventh arrondissement, Rachida Dati, had said the installation illegal and denounced the obstruction of “the prospect classified military School to the Eiffel Tower, in violation of the law”.

Marek and Clara Halter had attacked Rachida Dati for defamation. Convicted in first instance in 2011 and then on appeal the following year, Rachida Dati had seen the judgment broken in 2014 by the Court of Cassation.

Finally, according to the City of Paris, “the set of operations is organized in the respect of the users of the Champ-de-Mars, the protection of this exceptional site of the parisian heritage and in accordance with the sanitary rules current”.
