A gigantic blunder committed by the rider in the yellow jersey, Emanuel Buchmann (Bora), cost him in the first place a place on the podium in the tour of the Basque country, but it was ultimately Jakob Fuglsang, who came to pay the price.

It is clear after a dramatic finale and a no less dramatic aftermath, where the organizers of the basque World Tour-race felt so much of the responsibility for that Buchmann was running wrong in the final, to the blacksmith Jakob Fuglsang of the podium and gave the square to the German rider.

Fuglsang was before the stage one minute and 32 seconds after the Buchmann in the overall standings, and when he attacks on a climb, with 67 kilometres to the goal, it was with the overall victory in mind. He got in his attack, soon joined by his teammate Ion Izagirre, Adam Yates (Michelton-Scott) and Dan Martin and Tadej Pogacar (UAE).

The five udbrydere was soon knocked a large hole that Izagirre virtual was in the yellow jersey, while Dan Martin and Fuglsang were on the podium. On the very last kilometres towards the goal in Eibar drew Buchmann, however, so rapidly from behind, he could still manage to secure a place on the podium.

200 metres from the line he continued, however, straight forward to swing into the final straight. A terrible roar of the 26-year-old German, who thus lost his last remnant of hope to finish among the three best.

Izagirre, Martin and Fuglsang were celebrated at the podium, before organisers intervened and assigned Buchmann Fuglsangs space.
