But even before the movie is released, Disney is exposed to criticism. Media such as the BBC and the american kendismedie TMZ writes that Disney has the rights to use the term ‘Hakuna Matata’ in commercial contexts, but it considers among other things the kenyan group Them Mushrooms is unfair. They believe that the term is snatched.
way back in 1980, they released the song ‘Jambo Bwana’, which term, which means ‘no problems’ or ‘no worries’ in swahili included.

the Song went platinum in Kenya, and they wondered, when the song was published by Disney.
– We are much more informed on copyright today, and I’ve even taken courses in it, so we know more than we did back in 1980, when we released the song. We felt upset when Disney released their version of ’the Lion King’. It was our song, which made the term ‘Hakuna Matata’ popular, for it is the verse in our song. This is what we sing, says the group’s frontman John Katana to TMZ.

He has a hard time to understand how Disney could get away with it.
– Disney’s patent came 14 years later. We could see that they had stolen our song and changed the melody. But we knew nothing of copyright back then. We felt deprived of, but had no idea what we should do, he says.

But now, there may be a bit of help on the way. There are started a petition, which must tear the phrase ‘Hakuna Matata’ out of Disney’s hands and back to Africa, where many believe that it legitimately should hear at home.
so far 152.000 people signed on, Disney should drop their right to use the term.

Behind the collection is Shelton Mpala. He is annoyed with the use of Africa, and he hopes to find a solution.
– Many who speak swahili, have been shocked. You have not anet, that this had happened, he said to the BBC.
Mediegiganten have tried to get a comment from Disney, who has not returned.
John Katana tells at the same time, to TMZ, to you now will examine whether it is possible to bring proceedings against Disney. You can hear their version, which is sung hakuna matata, from 1980 here.
