Francis Reusser celebrated as an Exponent of the New Swiss film was a great success: in 1977, a Golden Leopard for “Le grand soir”, in 1985 César for “Derborence”. Now the 77-year-old photographer and Director from Vevey looks back on his long career. The journey into the past begins with a video message from the mountain village of Heiligenschwendi, the home of his father. The message is intended for Reussers own son, Jean, has cut several works of his father and this movie.

The Director leaves behind a plurality of such messages, and the spectators, together with Jean on a scavenger hunt. This leads to the early death of Francis’ parents and the formative time in the youth education home about his work in the Western Swiss television to the first steps as a Director and finally, the flashback ends back in the present.

The Western Swiss Director Francis Reusser looks back on his career and the film history of Switzerland: the “tracks and stories – La séparation des traces”. Video: YouTube/First Hand Films

“tracks and stories” is less an autobiography than a poetic Essay. Reusser mixed images from his archive, with excerpts of his work, often movie characters speak on his behalf, to the family, everyday life and film work more and more with each other to blur.

The narrative form and the meandering thoughts of the Director, ranging from a criticism of Consumerism and cézanne’s landscape painting up to the infamous soccer foul of the “Gabet” Chapuisat to Lucien Favre, complicate, in part, the access to the content. Nevertheless, the Film offers a personal insight into the thoughts and world of an artist who has influenced the Swiss cinema significantly.
