the PARIS (AsiaNews) – so – you learn by Asianews – that on his page Facebook official it was announced the death: “We are grieved and sad to communicate the death of dr. Mohamed Shahrour, which took place in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab emirates, Saturday 21 December 2019”. Called the “Martin Luther King of islam”, a famous scholar, reformer, and one of the leading exegetes, contemporary of the Koran, Mohamed Shahrour was born in Damascus in 1938. He completed his secondary studies in the syrian capital, before moving to Moscow, where he began his university studies in civil Engineering. When he returned to his hometown, in 1967, she became interested in the qur’anic exegesis and the study of the fundamentals of islam. He made it a passion to devote her life. He taught at the Faculty of civil Engineering of the University of Damascus until 1968, and in 1972 obtained a doctorate. That year, he was a professor.

rocked “the building” rigorist of the fundamentalists. Mohamed Shahrour and was unknown outside of Syria, until the early ’90s, when he published his work, founding “The book and the Qur’an, a contemporary reading”; it is the intellectual, providing new interpretations of the koran, based on a method of highly original analysis through a return to the Arabic of the SEVENTH century. As stated by Malak Chebal (considered to be one of the exponents of islamism, “illuminated”, no.d.r.) it was “a synthesis that blends all of the themes related to the understanding of the koranic text and its adaptability in space and time”. Since then, Shahrour has become the scholar and the thinker the most controversial in the islamic world, simply because his thought has rocked vigorously the building rigorist erected by the supporters of fundamentalism: that of the merchants of religion.

The islamic jurisprudence egemnizzata. Despite the obstacles encountered, such as the prohibition to publish his texts in some muslim Countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran, Mohamed Shahrour has remained very active in the take field of the “fiqh” (islamic jurisprudence, ed.) monopolized and taken hostage by theologians or those who have proclaimed spokesman of God. His method was clear: the fundamental reform of islam, to give it readability and, above all, to restore the consistency of the humanities. His thoughts and his interpretations of the koran have dealt with all the religious themes, for example, jihad, which is addressed in his essay, “Drying up the sources of terrorism, 2008”, but also the freedom of conscience, secularism, trade unionism, or the notion of justice, in his books “the State and society, 1994” and “Power and religion, 2014”. He had also proposed new readings of the Qur’an, against the tide of interpretations of the dominant and “official”.

An advocate of the freedom of conscience. Shahrour has always supported, and explained that freedom of conscience has an important place in the Qur’an. It is written explicitly because the verses say that men are free to believe or not to believe in God. With regard to its methodology of analysis of the koran, Shahrour said: “I Am an engineer with scientific training. I interpret the Qur’an in the manner of Isaac Newton. They make poetry. Read the works of Shakespeare. I discovered eliminating the synonyms that were created in an artificial way”. His work is essentially based on a fundamental notion: The “theory of limits”. This is a concept developed in regards to the nature of the divine law transmitted in the message koranic.

The films of the theologians, traditionalists. Restoring the meaning of many concepts of islam, the subject of consensus in religious institutions-muslim, Mohamed Shahrour as a thinker, iconoclast has given rise to many debates and triggered controversies on sensitive topics and locked from the religious institution such as al-Azhar. However, what has sparked the lightning, theologians, traditionalists, this is a founding principle of his methodology of analysis: “The Hadith (the sayings of the prophet Muhammad, editor’s note) have only a historical value but no religious value; in other words, have no place in sacredness. The Quran is the sole source of any legal reference for the muslim. According to Shahrour, the hadith are no longer entitled to summons, while the theologians have always regarded as a second legal source, after the Qur’an, and sometimes as a base to explain it.

attacks virulent suffered. This gave multiple responses and attacks virulent on the part of theologians, fundamentalists, and those of the muslim Brothers; in particular, earned him exile from the circles of thought. Also, Shahrour report them on its website, citing even their books. On the website, you can read, free of charge, his complete works, his lectures, as well as watch interviews and television programs in which he participated. His goal was not to get rich, but to give your contribution to helping the muslim world out of crisis, which has drowned over the centuries. Shahrour has tried, in an intelligent way, and from the inside of the koranic text, to explain the secularism, the freedom of the individual, the veil… and Insists on the problem of the sins that, according to the Quran, are limited to fourteen. All the others, that paralyze believers, are not only violations of the Text.

its a liberating thought, addressed to young people. Finally, Mohamed Shahrour leaves us in a fundamental work, a legacy that will certainly help the generations to continue the effort. Even if the islamic world seems to ignore it or even scomunicarlo, his thinking will triumph in the coming years by helping new generations to get out from the grip of the fundamentalists, the sunnis and the terrorists are close-minded. It will help them, because at the time it already helps thousands of young muslims to break the chains and free their minds from the cults.
