“Italy: Extradition exkommunist admits murder”

“Exkommunisten Cesare Battisti, who been extradited to Italy after having been on the run for several decades, recognizing the four murders he was convicted of in the 1970s, reports Italian media.”

“The 64-year-old Battisti was sentenced in 1979 to have been a member of an armed revolutionary organization, but two years after he escaped from prison. Since, he has lived in France, where he began a writing career, and later in Brazil, where the former government refused to disclose to him.”

“in 1993, he was sentenced in absentia to life in prison for murdering two police officers, for involvement in the murder of a butcher and of involvement in the planning of the murder of a jeweler. Battisti has consistently argued his innocence. He was arrested in Bolivia in January, whereupon he was extradited to Italy, and now admits guilt in all four cases, according to Italian prosecutors.”
