Jack Dorsey, the ceo of the social media platform Twitter, has received massive criticism for their appreciative comments about the country of Myanmar.

At the weekend he tweeted lyrical about a meditationsläger he found himself in the country, and wrote about how ”people are filled of happiness” and about how ”food is amazing” – despite the fact that the country has recently become most known for its treatment of the minority group, the rohingya, who the UN in a report has described as ”genocide”.

Dorsey had to comment on the allegations that he ignores the country’s human rights violations – also on Twitter.

”I am aware of the suffering and the appalling violations of human rights in Myanmar. I do not see that a visit to the country or to speak with the people who support. I did not mean to reduce something by failing to raise the issue, but could have acknowledged that I did not know enough and need to learn me more,” he writes.

He believes that his journey was a private and was made solely in the meditationssyfte, but informs its followers about what Twitter does for the situation in Myanmar: ”Twitter is a way for people to share news and information about events in Myanmar, as well as to document rohingyernas suffering.”
