The Catalan Maribel Lopez will co-lead with Carlos Urroz the next edition of Arco, feria in which it was working as a commercial director and programme commissioners since 2011. With this appointment Ifema, the organiser of the contemporary art fair of Spain’s most important, you want to ease the change in direction after Urroz should shew his desire “to undertake new projects”, once the editing of 2019, which will be held in Madrid from 27 February to 3 march, and where Peru will be the country invited. “The first thing I want to achieve is to keep the things that now work so well in the Arc. The fair has good health, but we can not think that everything is done and we must remain alert to the changes that each day you experience the art market”, commented this Tuesday, Maribel López (Barcelona, 1972), after you have made public your appointment.

The intention of Lopez, an art historian from the University of Barcelona, is to delve into a trend that has worked in the past editions: to maintain the number of participating galleries between the 200 and 210 and to limit the number of artists in each space. “It has been shown that it is better to delve into the work of one or two artists, that the public reacts better. There are already sections, such as Opening and Dialogues, in which only shows the work of two creators; and many galleries in the general programme have been adding to this trend”, says the new co-director of Arc whose career began in 1999 at the Gallery Estrany-de la Mota in Barcelona; to pass, in 2007, to address Maribel Lopez Gallery, Berlin.
