The cities of the world have to adjust to a study by the ETH Zurich, according to a drastic warming of the urban climate. 77 percent of the 520 largest cities would experience up to the year 2050, a significant change in the climatic conditions, according to the study published on Wednesday by scientists at the ETH Zurich.

In the Northern hemisphere would be in large cities in the future climate conditions, as they prevail today, more than a thousand kilometers further South, is it in the US scientific magazine “Plos One”, which is printed in the study.

22 percent of the cities have to adjust accordingly, even in a completely new climate conditions. In European cities, the summer will rise by 3.5 degrees warmer, the Winter temperatures 4.7 degrees. London will get conditions like today in Madrid, the climate in Paris will meet today in the Australian, Canberra in the prevailing conditions.

Optimistic estimate

For the study, the researchers had laid out a relatively optimistic estimate of the global temperature increase in the course of the climate change as a basis. For their model calculations, they assumed that the average temperature rise of 1.4 degrees.

The Paris climate agreement by 2015 requires limiting the temperature rise below two degrees compared to pre-industrial age. Against this Background, the researchers called for further efforts in the fight against climate change. (scl/sda)
