The Prix Meret Oppenheim in this year, Meili & Peter architects, Samuel Schellenberg, and Shirana Shahbazi. With 40’000 Swiss francs most highly endowed art prize of the Swiss Confederation, is awarded in the categories of architecture, art education, and art. The prizes will be awarded on the recommendation of the Swiss Federal art Commission and the price-makers during Art Basel in June with the award.
With Shirana Shahbazi (born. 1974) is awarded for an outstanding photo artist. In her Work she explores the possibilities of photography as a medium in the direction of conceptual art and abstraction, and surprised again and again with installation Works. The art Commission notes that Shahbazis will be described artistic practice of the international criticism and discussed in detail, and their Work in museums, galleries and biennials would be shown all over the world. The photo artist is managed according to the Jury, “to renew the language of contemporary photography, to expand the boundaries of the medium and to develop a poetic view on the outside world and to the most ordinary objects.” Shahbazi was born in Iran, emigrated to Germany and has lived since the 1990s in Zurich.
Humble and yet pointing the way
The architects Marcel Meili (born. 1953) and Markus Peter (geb. 1957) have been working together since 1987 and have buildings such as the Zölli-high-rise building in Zurich-West, the residential complex fountain moss in Kilchberg or the cinema and residential building Riffraff in Zurich built. Outstanding projects abroad, among other things, the Passage in the em Hofstatt in Munich, a home in Billancourt, or the Nobel Center in Stockholm. Marcel Meili is a Professor at ETH Zurich and was one of the head of the ETH Studio in Basel. The Swiss Federal art Commission commends Meili & Peter architects “due to their bold, restless, at the same time humble and yet trendsetting style that you devote the Interplay of Form, space, structure and construction, in which each project is as a Whole terms, this is always more than the sum of its parts”.
Samuel Schellenberg (born. 1971), the Swiss Federal art Commission, the long-time art critic for the Geneva newspaper “Le Courrier”. Since 2004, Schellenberg had established as the arts editor of the only independent newspaper in the lake Geneva region as a dedicated personality of the culture of journalism, it is said in the message.
