Scientists: Biofuel harms the environment

Sweden’s bet on biofuels is both unnecessary and to the detriment of the climate, the researchers write, Stefan Wirsenius, and Timothy D Searchinger – Chalmers, respectively, the Princeton – in Today’s News op-ed piece.

The two researchers saw the so-called reduktionsplikten, which applies since 1 July, with the aim to gradually increase the blend of biofuels in petrol and diesel.

But Wirsenius and Searchinger shows in a new study that carbon emissions are likely, on the contrary, will increase.

the Reason is that the production of biofuels requires large areas, which implies deforestation.
