“Signs of spring trendar all the previous”
“Blooming wood anemones in your part of the country? How long have björkarnas lövsprickning come?”
“During valborg, you can report the signs of spring in a research project.”
“Already we can see a clear trend that spring is arriving earlier and earlier.”
“for several years researchers and volunteers have collected signs of spring all over the country in a research project. The aim is to examine whether there are persistent differences in when spring arrives now compared with the past, because of climate change.”
“During valborg, it is time again. All who want to participate and report the results of six common plants in the Vårkollens website.”
“– Sign of spring is a bit of a dear old tradition. We want to see how far spring has come at specific points. And with that we have an incredibly long, narrow country, it is different of course, very much, ” says Moa Pettersson at the Swedish botanical society (SBF), which is behind the Vårkollen.”
“the Snapshot is then compared with the data from over a hundred years back in time, then the corresponding observations were made.”
“– Then we can see the differences between the present and pre-industrial times, before the impact on the climate done their, and compare how large the deviations we get because of it, ” says Ola Langvall, researchers at the Swedish university of agricultural sciences (SLU), which compiles the results.”
“On previous occasions has more than 4 000 observations annually reported on the flowering anemones, blue anemones, coltsfoot, willow, bird cherry and björkarnas lövsprickning, and in some cases seen large differences compared with in the past. The last seven years, the wood anemones flowered almost two weeks earlier than just over a hundred years ago, and björkarnas lövsprickning have been 40-50 miles further north than what was normal at the beginning of the 1900s.”
“Each year, however, is unique, and so far it is not possible to draw any firm conclusions on the impacts of climate change.”
“– There are big differences from year to year and we therefore need many years to see if there is a trend or not, ” says Ola Langvall.”
“this year spring has come unusually early, in large parts of Sweden, and therefore it becomes extra interesting to see how vårväxterna affected, considers Ola Langvall.”
“– It puts a little perspective on how far it can go with a changing climate. It moves the border a bit for how early it can become, ” he says.”
“the Volunteers all over the country can participate in the research project, and it is easy to report.”
“– If you take vitsippan as an example, we want to know: the in bloom, have bloomed all over, it has not been started yet or is it not at all. It is easy species, and easy tasks, ” says Moa Pettersson on SBF.”
“In Vårkollen can volunteers across the country contribute to documenting a handful of signs of spring.”
“It comes coltsfoot, hepatica, leaf, willow, bird cherry, and birch.”
“On 30 april–1 may, can you report how far the flowering and lövsprickning has come on varkollen.see.”
“this is The fifth year that the research project which is a collaboration between the Swedish botanical association and the Swedish university of agricultural sciences, carried out.”
