Cem Özdemir, Federal Minister of Economics for Food and Agriculture, wants to introduce an advertising ban for unhealthy foods that contain too much sugar, fat or salt. The only question is – what is unhealthy and in what doses, what does “too much” mean? Özdemir’s plans, which are not entirely surprising because such advertising bans have been on the agenda in the EU for some time, have been criticized by media and food associations.

In this edition of our podcast “Die Medien-Woche” we talk about advertising bans. On the one hand, there is the question of whether such restrictions do not threaten the freedom of citizens, since consumer decisions, even unreasonable ones, should be left to the people themselves. On the other hand, there is also the question of whether advertising bans affect the consumption of certain products at all.

We are also looking at plans for a future council to help reform public service broadcasting. The broadcasting commission of the federal states wants to set up such an expert committee, but there is still disagreement about the composition.

We also look back at the Republica digital conference last year. At that time, the moderator Linda Zervakis interviewed Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The “taz” found out a while ago that the Chancellor’s Office paid the presenter a “flat fee” – not a fee, but probably a kind of expense allowance. Now the newspaper has also found out the specific amount.

The “Media Week” is a podcast about the world of media and its makers. Christian Meier, editor at WELT, and Stefan Winterbauer, editor-in-chief of the industry service Meedia, talk about the most important topics of the week every Friday. Background, analytical, entertaining.
