60 times as large as Switzerland, the democratic Republic of the Congo. That alone actually makes already clear that some of this is more complex than with us. If you look on the last few decades back, it come to colonization (by the Belgium and outlandishly), independence (sudden and chaotic) as well as the civil war top. Plus Ebola.
The Museum Rietberg is now daring to make something quite Ambitious. And indeed, the whole complexity of the Congo in a single Look, reflect. That can’t possibly fold, concedes already in its title, “fiction of the Congo”.
But a try is worth it, and so the exhibition, as befits this house, is building on the legacy of a pioneer: The German ethnologist Hans Himmelheber (what a pretty Name, by the way!) was before the Second world war in the Congo, photographed, documented, acted with art, and now, posthumously, for the historical backdrop of about a dozen contemporary Kong makes Oles of artists thinking about their home: for example, Yves Sambu, with its magnificent series of photographs of the from head to toe, styled so-called Sapeurs in Kinshasa. Go, blow your mind let!
